Parents play an essential role in the academic, social, athletic and spiritual success of students at St. John the Baptist. There are a variety of resources and opportunities for parents to be engaged in their children's education. SJB relies on parents and families to create a safe and stimulating experience for students. We hope parents find the resources here helpful. Information is provided regularly via SJB News, as well.

Here are some ways that SJB could use help from parent volunteers:

Please contact the principal if you are interested and willing to take on one of these tasks.

      Expectations for Lunch Duty

Thank you to the parents who have signed up for lunch duty. Our teachers are grateful for your service. Here is the sign up link

It is important that lunch-duty volunteers understand and agree to follow the guidelines below:

      Volunteer Supervisor Expectations

      1. Volunteers must have child-protection certification before signing up for lunch duty.

      2. Volunteers must watch the children during lunch duty.

      3. Volunteers must be willing to address students who misbehave by pointing out the lunchtime rules and reporting misbehavior to the classroom teacher.

      3. Volunteers must know the lunch duty rules.

      Student Lunchtime Expectations

      1. Lunch Times:

                                K-4 Lunch   12:00 to 12:20

                               5-8 Lunch    12:20 to 12:40

      2. Students may not give away food, ask someone else for food, or trade food.

      3. Students eat lunch in a civilized manner, speaking at a conversational level. There should be no yelling, throwing things, unkind or inappropriate conversation.

      4. Students in grades K-4 eat at their desks during the 20-minute lunch period. Students in grades 5-8 may move their chairs to another desk with the teacher's permission or the supervisor's permission.

      5. Students must have the supervisor’s permission to use the restrooms.

      6. Students may leave their seats to throw away trash or put away lunch boxes.

      7. Students clean their desktops and the floor around them at the end of lunch.

      8. Students stay in their seats until they are dismissed by the lunch supervisor, individually or by row, not all at once.

    • Access to a Lift

If anyone has access to a lift, we would be grateful if we could use it to replace the old faded Blue Ribbon banner with a fresh, bright Blue Ribbon banner on the outside wall between the gym windows.

To volunteer or work with children, adults must be Virtus-certified in the Archdiocese of Washington Child-Protection Program.

    How to Get Child-Protection Certification

    • FAQ About VIRTUS Certification

What if I am already certified?

      • If you were certified with a fingerprint-background check, your certification is complete. Volunteers certified with just an electronic background check must be fingerprinted. If you are unsure, contact Mrs. Kerley.

Do field trip chaperones need to be certified?

      • Yes, chaperones must be Virtus-certified. Certification is mandatory for any adult to volunteer in a school-related activity with children present.

I went through a fingerprint-background check for my job. Can the Archdiocese use the clearance I've already received?

      • The Archdiocese requires independent completion of a criminal-background check for child-protection certification. Your clearance for work doesn't apply to ADW child-protection certification.
    • Steps for New Volunteers

       How to Get Child-Protection Certification

      • Create an account at http://www.virtus.org with St. John the Baptist as your parish (Archdiocese of Washington).
      • Complete the online training session of Protecting God’s Children for Adults.
      • Sending training confirmation to the parish director of child protection, Martha Kerley, at mkerley@sjbssparish.org.
      • Make an appointment with a fingerprinting center. There's a list of more than 70 fingerprinting locations at the bottom of this webpage.  The one that's closest to the school (an 8-minute drive) is American Identity Solutions on Prosperity Drive in Silver Spring, off Route 29. Here's the map location. Bring two IDs and  the Livescan registration.
      • Contact Mrs. Kerley to tell her that you have been fingerprinted and schedule a day and time to bring a completed volunteer application and two ID's for a background check.
